Q is for Quietness

Q is for Quietness
by Wendy Elizabeth Middleton

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
1 Thessalonians 4:11

Make
This is an action word. In order to make something you have to work on it. In order to make a cake you have to gather the ingredients, mix them together in the proper order, bake the cake at the proper temperature for the proper length of time, and apply the frosting. This takes effort. It also takes thought and planning.
Ambition
Ambition is a strong desire to achieve something. You must want it so much that you are willing to work for it. A quiet life doesn’t just happen to happen. You have to make it happen. You cannot control the actions and reactions of others but you can control your own.

Your must control your reactions to other people. It is natural to offer hurt for hurt. It requires a deliberate decision to offer kindness for hurt. Your reactions must be just as deliberate as your actions. You must choose, before any altercation takes place, what your reaction is going to be. You must choose it, practice it and live it.

Mind your own business
We often jump into conflict whether we are invited or not. And even when we are invited, if the conflict isn’t ours we should refuse the invitation. If you must choose a side choose God’s side. God loves all of his children equally.

Work with your hands
Even office workers can work with their hands clasped and heads bowed in the service of prayer. The point is to work, not be idle. We are facing large-scale unemployment. Work is scarce. Unemployed and idle are not the same thing. Unemployment is not deliberate idleness. Open your Bible, get on your knees, send words of encouragement over the Internet, do not remain idle.

I urge, then first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

Use your quiet time
Remember that when God appeared to Elijah did not come in the wind that tore the mountains apart or in the earthquake or the fire, God came as a quiet whisper (1 Kings 19:11-12)

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalms 46:10

Simple – Ain’t – Easy
But hearing the voice of God is worth it
